Fundamental Basics

Basics are closet staples that are essentially everyday wear.  Plain white tees, jeans, cashmere sweater, black blazer, even the LBD you can wear to work.  You can mix and match and wear them on a continual basis.  They can last a lifetime or just a season.

I enjoy traversing the style map when it comes to the rudimentary aspects of one’s closet.  For instance, I am fond of Theory, James Perse, Vince, and Mother Jeans, but I also love Zara, J Crew, Ralph Lauren outlet, and American Apparel.  I do, on occasion, dish out for a splashy basic like Dior, Chloe, Chanel, but typically only when I discover them on consignment.

It is vital to understand your body and what works to accent your best features.  For instance, I have a torso on the shorter side, so typically I go for a longer shirt that works to elongate my middle section.  My legs are one of my best features, so I like to wear boot cut and skinny pants as well as a great mini.  I also have a slim foot with legs on the thinner side, so I like to wear a pointier shoe to accent the natural form of my body. Get to know your body really well. What do you want to play up?  What works best for you?

Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.
