As the dawning of the new year approaches, we reflect upon the triumphes and travails of the closing year.  We think of what we could do differently, how our lives can improve, and reminisce softly and wistfully on those who are most important to each of us.  Hopefully, we embrace what is to come in the new year with open arms and an open heart.

A fabulous New Year’s accessory to walk into any bash with by your side (in addition to a fabulous dashing gentleman) is the dainty minaudiere.  These are more than simply a clutch, they are also a piece of jewelry.  The first of its kind was originated in the 1930s by the famed Van Cleef & Arpels.

Les minaudieres are stunning when created with inlaid mother of pearl, or nacre, as this composite is alernately known.  Nacre is the shell layer produced by molluscs.  It is a very resilient material, but also incredibly aesthetic.  This is precisely the same material that composes the outer coating of pearls.
